THE STRIKERS STORY.

Imagine sunny afternoons at Knysna's Loerie Park. A group of ladies gather, not just for a chat, but for something more: the beautiful game! It all started in September 2021 with Strikers, a social football group for women. Founder Matt Kerswill saw a need for fun and exercise, and these ladies, brand new to football, were hooked! A year later, they even braved their first ever tournament – a testament to their newfound passion.

The story only begins here. Around the same time, fate brought three 13-year-old boys to Loerie Park. Seeing the ladies play, they asked to join – a simple request that sparked a movement. Matt, along with his partner Rachel Wood, realized a harsh reality: many Knysna kids, particularly from communities like Hornlee and Kiyalethu, lacked extracurricular activities. Post-Covid, the options had shrunk, leaving these boys with nowhere to channel their energy.

Fueled by a desire to do more, the Strikers FC Development Academy was born in October 2022. From a humble beginning of 10 boys and a handful of soccer balls, Strikers quickly grew. By November, they had an incredible 40 players, forming U13, U15, and U17 teams! Dedication and passion were contagious – not just among the players, but also within the community.

Jeeves Heated Towel Rails, touched by the Strikers' mission, became their first sponsor. Kim, Mark, and Neil, driven by a genuine desire to help, stepped up in a big way. Their support, along with contributions from the Knysna Networking Group, Cambalala Guesthouse, Pet and Pool Knysna, and many others, made a world of difference. From soccer boots to team kits, these sponsors ensured the boys had the tools to succeed.

But Strikers is more than just drills and matches. They're building a community. Local businesses like Dream Knysna, Graphiti, Aquaman Pool Care and Orca Fuels have helped with essentials like food, water, and even transportation. And the dedication doesn't stop there. Volunteer coaches, each with their own footballing experience, share their knowledge and passion with the boys. Without them, Strikers doesn't work. It goes to show that there are still kind, compassionate individuals ready and willing to make a difference in the lives of others.

Today, Strikers is well over 100 strong, They're playing, they're learning, and they're dreaming big. Strikers is a testament to the power of community, a place where potential is nurtured and dreams take flight.

The future looks bright for Strikers. They're not just shaping young footballers, they're shaping a brighter Knysna, one kick at a time.
